Track 20: Pharmaceutics
Introduction
To transform a new chemical entity (NCE) into a drug suitable for widespread human usage, the field of pharmacy known as pharmaceutics must be considered. Dosage form design is the science of pharmaceutics. Many substances have been shown to have pharmacological effects, yet a patient cannot benefit from a raw chemical. Pharmaceutics is the study of how to create pharmaceutical dosage forms from active pharmaceutical ingredients. Pharmaceutics encompasses a wide range of subfields, such as drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; drug pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacogenomics; drug pharmacovigilance and drug formulation and technology.
Traditionally, pharmacists' primary responsibility has been to fill patient prescriptions for medications. These days, pharmacists are relied on to provide guidance on everything from drug selection and dosing to drug interactions and adverse effects to both patients and doctors. To ensure the patient's safety and the medication's efficacy, pharmacists keep close tabs on their well-being. While compounding (the process of mixing chemicals to create medication) is sometimes done by pharmacists, most pharmaceuticals are mass-produced by pharmaceutical firms in consistent dosage and drug delivery forms. In some areas, pharmacists can write prescriptions on their own or in concert with a primary care physician according to a predetermined process
